The last learning activity of the project "Young Urban Creative Inclusive Tours", in which the German Federation of the Blind is the applicant institution and our association is the partner, was held in Liege, Belgium between 26-30 April 2023.
In this city tour, which aimed to make the historical and architectural texture of Liege accessible with tactile elements, the Royal Opera of Liège Wallonia, St Paul's Cathedral, La Batte market, La Lumiere Association office were visited respectively. On the last day of the programme, the participants shared their feedback by observing the learning activity holistically in the evaluation session.
On behalf of Turkey, EGED members Zeynep Barak, Ali Alpaslan, Ali Aydoğmuş, Orhan Yalçın and Claire Özel took part in the project. Alialpaslan, one of our participants, summarises his impressions of the Liege city tour as follows:
"This was my first visit to Belgium / Liege. I would like to state that I am very happy to experience this trip by taking part in such a project on behalf of EGED.
Although the city of Liege was generally designed for the orthopaedically disabled to move comfortably, it was not accessible enough for the visually impaired to walk comfortably on the street independently. Since companion support is generally more prominent in Europe, I think that this situation is taken into consideration in accessibility arrangements. For example, the presence of tables on the pavements where we can hit our heads while walking, the fact that guide lines are much less common than in Turkey, and the announcement system that tells bus stops does not work sufficiently are my main observations about city accessibility.
I can say that accessibility activities in many provinces of Turkey are much more advanced than those in Liege. Finally, I feel very lucky to be able to make a comparison and share my observations on accessibility between these countries. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this projject."
